Enterprise Content and Collaboration Management (ECCM)
Content
It is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of all corporate information exists in the form of unstructured content and this is one of the biggest challenges for collaboration in companies. In this context, Enterprise Content and Collaboration Management (ECCM) is defined as a new topic area in practice and research in business informatics, which comprises technologies, tools and methods for the acquisition, administration, storage and provision of content (information, documents) throughout the company and for collaboration. ECCM is understood as an “integrated approach to managing all of an organization’s information including paper documents, data, reports, web pages and digital assets […. and all…] the strategies, tools, processes, and skills an organization needs to manage all its information assets over their lifecycle” (Smith and McKeen 2003, pp. 647-648). The goal of the Enterprise Content and Collaboration Management module is to introduce students to concepts and strategies of Enterprise Content and Collaboration Management and to introduce technologies, tools and methods that are used to organize structured and unstructured content in companies.
Transfer of knowledge
The event focused on the digitization of the working world and new forms of work. Theoretical and technical basics of digital working groups, digital communities and the management of digital content will be taught.
Application of knowledge
Within the framework of the course, a specially developed teaching case will be used with the help of which the students can take up the theories of the lecture and analyse digital working environments. In addition, computer exercises are used so that students can develop technical solutions to problems of digital work with the help of various CSCW solutions (e.g. Office 365, SharePoint, etc.).
Implementation of knowledge
Students should work on a project in (virtual) teams. The aim of the project is a (virtual) team experience to get to know and master the challenges of a (virtual) team. Content of the project is the design of an Enterprise Content and Collaboration Management solution for a company (case study).
Learning objectives
The aim of the module is to develop a basic understanding of Enterprise Content and Collaboration Management (ECCM) in order to apply different applications and functionalities of ECCM, to analyse and design usage scenarios of ECCM in companies and to configure the basic functions of an ECCM system based on Microsoft Sharepoint.
After successfully completing the module, students will be able to understand the importance of ECCM for the design of processes in companies, what the main functionalities and characteristics of ECCM systems are, what the different stages of the life cycle of documents are, how ECCM systems can be successfully introduced in companies, what current trends and developments in ECCM are and how technologies and tools support and integrate the various aspects of ECCM. After successfully completing the module, students will also be able to use the basic functionalities of an ECCM system, since Microsoft SharePoint is introduced as an ECCM system as part of the lecture and exercise and the implementation of various ECCM concepts using Microsoft SharePoint is practiced as an example.
